Smashed bass featured in 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Video
to Go Under the Hammer -
The bass guitar featured in Nirvana's iconic 1991 music video for breakout grunge hit 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' is set to be auctioned.
The instrument is a Zen-On bass guitar which bassist Krist
Novoselic purchased from a pawn shop prior to the shoot
as he knew it was set be smashed to pieces.
The remnants of the bass will be sold by Christie's in London on November the 29th at a special entertainment memorabilia auction which also includes Indiana Jones's whip and the Holy Grail used in the Last Crusade film. Other musical artefacts on offer include Bob Dylan's high school yearbook complete with a personal message written by himself.
The body of the guitar was salvaged by one of the extras in the music video, which featured the band playing an impromptu gig in front of a teenage audience in a dark moody space flanked by black-clad cheerleaders.
Christie's estimates the guitar will sell for £15,000 to £25,000.
