Danny Gill - Keeping Up With The Chords Part 2

Lesson Notes

** As featured in issue 57 **

Hello everyone and welcome back! We’re going to continue with the 2nd instalment in our series dedicated to ‘keeping up with the chords’. This is from a tune of mine called ‘Per’ that will be on a Lick Library Signature Sessions DVD. If you like what you hear and want to dig deeper please check out the DVD/stream at licklibrary.com

The chords:

Cm

Bb

Am7b5

Ab7

Amaj7

The scales:

The overall key center is C minor but with a few twists:

  • The first 2 chords (Cm and Bb) can belong to C minor or C dorian.
  • The 3rd chord (Am7b5) belongs to C dorian.
  • The next chord, Ab7, has a few options but most importantly the Ab7 chord  contains the note Gb which is the blues note in the key of C. I try to highlight the blues note (Gb) over the Ab7 chord as much as possible.
  • Over the Ab major7 chord I use the C natural minor scale. Remember, another name for the natural minor scale is the aeolian mode.

Here is a comparison of the scales:

C natural minor: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb C dorian:C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb

C blues: C, Eb, F, Gb, G,Bb

Words of wisdom:

If all else fails, the C minor pentatonic scale always sounds great! Find a few licks and repeat them; it’s OK to let the chords do the work. Keep on rockin’, and we’ll see you next time:)
