Dean Guitars are well known for their eye-popping guitar designs and finishes. They are incredibly popular in the Hard Rock and Metal World, and for very good reason! Not only do they stand out from the crowd but they play incredibly well! I think it’s safe to say that Dean Guitars literally play themselves! The Shred is real! Today I’m lucky enough to check out this awesome new V style Guitar with an amazing Quilt Maple top. This model is part of Dean’s brand new ‘Select’ series, bringing professional standards of instrument to the masses without having to get a loan! Their goal has been to provide high quality electronics and build at a reasonable price.

This Select Series model (like others in the same series) has a Satin Neck finish, which makes it super quick to play. Couple this with the 12 inch fretboard radius, jumbo frets, set neck and supreme upper neck access thanks to the V design, this thing is a shred speed machine! The Guitar is loaded with Seymour Duncan TB5 and APH1 pickups, high output, punchy humbuckers which are controlled via two volume controls, 3 way switch and tone. The audio taper pots are designed to give you a smooth roll off without losing clarity and punch in your tone. Super cool. The Guitar comes equipped with a Korean Floyd Rose 1000 for all your dive bomb and whammy bar action needs.

The elephant in the room may be (for some!) that this is a V style Guitar, it’s designed to be used standing on stage or at the very least sat in a classical position. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be reading this review if you weren’t in the market for or even interested in this style instrument. So I won’t go on, but for those who are curious. This design is popular with metal styles not only for the looks, but the angle in which your picking hand falls onto the Guitar, it makes palm muting and fast riffing very easy, so much so that it’s addictive. The other thing to be aware of is the pointy headstock and the size of this guitar; you have to be careful when traveling with it or wielding it on stage, however the large body and headstock add to the balance of the guitar physically and sonically. I feel that Pinch Harmonics, Dive bombs and long sustaining notes with wide vibrato seem to last forever on this guitar! It’s a pleasure to play because of this!

Having said all this about its looks, I hope I’m not making it out to be too extreme, the Trans Brazilia quilt maple top and the curved edges of the V body give this more of a ‘classic’ V style vibe. The Guitar is versatile for most hard rock and metal styles and it’s not trying to be anything else, which is fantastic!

If you’re a fan of V Shape Guitars, Dean Guitars, exotic-looking guitars, then this new Select Model from Dean is well worth looking into. I had a lot of fun playing it, and even if a V isn’t your thing, you’ll think twice when you get to play it through a loud high gain amp! Awesome times!
