The music lecturer responsible for the much criticised HeavyMetal degree has appeared on the BBC Breakfast show to defend thequalification.

Music Lecturer Liam Maloy, who works at New College Nottinghamwhere the course is available, has responded to accusations thatthe degree is a "waste of time" and an "easyoption" for students by stating that it would be"academically rigorous."

He went on to add,

"In the past, heavy metal has not been taken seriously andis seen as lacking academic credibility when compared with othergenres such as jazz and classical music. But that's just a culturalconstruction."
