Tens of thousands of fans descended on London's N17 to soak in the atmosphere as the world-famous American Rock icons, led by iconic frontman Axl Rose, performed a terrific set, including favourites like Welcome to the Jungle, Live and Let Die, November Rain and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.

There was even a surprise appearance from country sensation Carrie Underwood, who joined in a rendition of Sweet Child o’ Mine and the encore performance of Paradise City.

Rose, joined by lead guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, keyboardists Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese, rhythm guitarist Richard Fortus and drummer Frank Ferrer, enjoyed a wild reception as he sang from a specially-constructed stage in front of the North Stand.

It was the first of a two-night appearance from the group, with their second concert slated for the following night.

An expectant crowd reaches fever pitch as the band finally emerge from backstage with their trademark bat effects evoking a sense of chaos on a humid Friday night.

Opening track It's So Easy rouses a packed stadium, and shortly after Chinese Democracy and Welcome To The Jungle wreak havoc, the latter sending everyone hysterical with Axl’s virtuoso vocals as impressive today as ever.

Battling sound complaints from fans near the front claiming they can’t hear Axl or the guitars, he appeases the crowd by quipping he’s known as “Axl the Accommodator”, hinting at the fact he’s trying to deal with the issue with technicians during Estranged.

At this point, Axl is Full of anger and adrenaline, and soldiers on with their emphatic version of Live and Let Die proving why they still fill stadiums worldwide after all the years of turmoil.

Anthems November Rain and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door are met with sheer delight, the whole stadium lit beautifully by a sea of bright white lights, the 70.000 plus punters here lost in pure emotion.

For their short but sweet encore, Patience starts with a superb Blackbird cover by The Beatles.

Carrie Underwood again joins them for Paradise City bringing the long-awaited first night to an electrifying end.
